Back by Sunset is a swimwear brand rooted in the idea of nostalgic freedom—a return to the feeling of summer that felt endless, unstructured, and entirely present. It draws from early 2000s coastal culture, not as aesthetic reference alone, but as a way of recalling how beach days once felt: active, social, and unconcerned with how they looked while they were happening. The brand exists in response to swimwear culture that prioritizes appearance over experience. While fit, confidence, and how the product looks on the body remain important, Back by Sunset shifts the focus toward what happens while wearing it—surfing, listening to music, taking photos on a digital camera, playing beach games, and staying outside until the sun goes down.

Description

The Back by Sunset woman is expressive and visually aware, with an interest in how she styles herself, but her attention quickly moves away from appearance once she is in the moment. She is equally comfortable alone or with friends, often spending entire days at the beach without planning what comes next. Her relationship to clothing is intuitive—mixing, mismatching, and layering swimwear with oversized tees or boy shorts depending on what the day requires, rather than how it is meant to be worn.

Visually, the brand is grounded in candid, documentary-style imagery that captures real interaction rather than constructed perfection. Vintage-inspired textures, striped motifs, and retro typography reference early 2000s surf culture, while a cleaner photographic approach keeps the identity contemporary. The result is a balance of nostalgia and restraint—familiar but not referential.

Back by Sunset is ultimately designed around a simple emotional idea: not just looking good at the beach, but losing track of time there. A summer that doesn’t feel styled or staged, but lived fully enough that you only notice it ending when you’re told to come back by sunset.
