Degernate Gambler
The project brief challenged students to redesign an existing magazine feature article, including a front cover and two editorial spreads. I chose The Atlantic’s April issue featuring “My Year as a Degenerate Gambler” by McKay Coppins because of its bold yet restrained visual direction. My goal was to create an immediate sense of immersion into the psychological world of gambling — seductive, disorienting, and nostalgic. While the original article presents sports betting as playful and enticing, subtle visual cues reveal a darker undertone of addiction and loss. I wanted the design to reflect this tension between excitement and danger.

Project Notes
Description
This concept informed my colour palette, typography, and overall art direction. I used red throughout the spreads to evoke urgency, temptation, danger, and emotional intensity, mirroring the adrenaline associated with gambling culture. The retro monochromatic imagery and textured visual treatment were inspired by the timeless aesthetic of casinos — environments that often feel untouched by time and disconnected from reality.
My choice of Futura was intentional, as its geometric structure and historical association with modernism created an interesting contrast against the nostalgic visual language of the layouts. I wanted the typography to feel bold and commanding while reinforcing the idea of entering a manufactured, machine-driven world built around excess and escapism.
The layouts were designed to balance clarity with tension. Overscaled typography, deliberate negative space, and strong visual hierarchy helped guide the reader through the spreads while maintaining a sense of unease and visual immersion. I wanted the reader to feel as though they were being pulled into the same hypnotic environment described throughout the article — cinematic, isolating, and difficult to escape.
This project strengthened my understanding of editorial storytelling and how typography, pacing, and visual restraint can shape the emotional experience of reading.
