Daydreaming
This project required students to visually interpret a magazine article through typography and image-making, with the title functioning as part of the visual composition rather than as separate text. I selected The Power of Daydreaming in Enhancing Creativity by E.D. Gibson because I was interested in exploring the relationship between the conscious and subconscious mind, and how ideas often exist beneath the surface before fully forming into conscious thought.

Project Notes
Description
I approached the piece through a high-fashion editorial lens, imagining how the article might appear in a publication such as Vogue. This influenced my typographic direction, leading me to pair Didot with Helvetica to balance elegance with clarity. Didot reinforced the refined editorial tone, while Helvetica softened the composition and prevented the layout from feeling overly serif-heavy.
The imagery was selected to reflect the surreal and layered nature of daydreaming. I duplicated and offset the image, reducing the opacity and sharpness of the secondary layer to create a blurred, dreamlike effect. This distortion was intended to represent the subconscious mind existing beneath conscious thought — present, but less fully defined and more difficult to access. The overlapping eyes created through this layering further reinforce the coexistence of conscious and subconscious thought.
To further support this concept, the title moves across both pages, with the word “dreaming” partially embedded into the image itself. The blurred and layered typography was designed to feel fragmented and partially inaccessible, reflecting the fluid and abstract nature of subconscious ideas. Scale, layering, and negative space were used throughout the composition to create a gradual sense of movement across the spread, encouraging the viewer to engage with the piece slowly, similar to the way thoughts emerge through daydreaming.
